Chapter 14

Annie looked up as Casey pushed the bakery door open and rushed inside eagerly. She looked around checking there were no customers and then hustled over to the counter.

“Jake just brought Walter in for questioning,” she said.

Maggie put down the pie she was slicing and came closer. “Really?” Annie asked.

Casey nodded. “I saw him come in. He’s claiming he is innocent, but Jake seems to be investigating.”

Annie frowned.

“What?” Maggie asked. “I thought you were suspicious of Walter.”

“A little, I mean he has a motive, the means, and the opportunity, but I just don’t feel like it fits.”

“Well, he’s saying he didn’t kill Ursula, but I guess we’ll have to wait to find out.” Casey shrugged.

“Jake spoke to Rodger and ruled him out, right?” Annie asked.

“I wouldn’t say ruled him out,” Casey shook her head. “I’m not sure we can rule anyone out. It’s crazy, everywhere we look there are suspects. At this point it’s easier to find people who didn’t want to hurt Ursula than those that did!”

Annie began to wander around the shop, one hand on her chin. “Walter, and Carla are both staying at the B&B, either of them could have hidden the note, just as easily as Jayne or Mel.”

“Presuming someone did hide it,” Maggie pointed out. “Someone could just have picked it up and stuffed it in the drawer”.

“Or Walter could have hidden it thinking it would implicate him.” Casey pointed out.

“Both of those things are true,” Annie mused. “Oh, this is so messy.”

They fell into silence for a few moments.

“Maybe we all just need to take a breath. Relax, we could be so focused on trying to see how the pieces fit together, we forgot what the puzzle picture looks like.”

Annie frowned. “Maybe the trouble is, we don’t have the full picture.” She bit her lip and looked out of the window.

“What do you mean?” Casey asked.

Annie turned back to them. “Ok, look, when we found out who killed the mayor, we figured it out because we, or at least you, knew everyone. We knew all the players. Jake said it himself; the town knows everyone’s secrets and eventually that was the murderer's undoing. But we don’t know Ursula, Walter, Carla, or Rodger. We need to know more about them to find out if they could be the killer. And we need to know more about Ursula, so we can figure out who was the most likely to…”

“Bump her off,” Maggie finished her thoughts. Annie smiled.

“Ok,” Casey nodded. “But Jake won’t like it if we go poking around.”

“Well then we better not tell him,” Annie grinned.

“Where do we start?” Maggie asked, her eyes dancing a little.

“I guess we can talk to Walter, Rodger, and Carla, try to find out a little more about Ursula. By talking to them about her, we can maybe get them to open up about themselves.”

“How do we get them to open up though?” Casey asked. “I mean, it’s helpful if we have a reason to talk to them rather than just wandering over like town busybodies.
